Volunteers serve a very important role in the Medina City Schools. As a volunteer you help to support educational programming and experiences for our students.
For all new volunteers and for those whose children have moved from one school building to another, we ask that you complete the online Volunteer Application. If you are not able to complete the application online, please call 330-636-3012 to obtain a hard copy application or stop in one of the school building offices for a copy. Once you have submitted the Volunteer Application, you will receive an e-mail containing further instructions for fingerprinting.
Individuals volunteering on a regular basis in the schools and/or whose volunteer responsibilities involve individual or group tutoring with students will need to have a Background Check. This requirement is for your and our students’ safety. The Background Check must be completed and filed with the district prior to the beginning of your volunteer service. Please refer to the Background Check Reference list below to determine whether you must have one completed. Individuals with a felony are not eligible to volunteer in the Medina City Schools.
The following stipulates if you need a Background Check:
•Volunteering on a regular basis within a school (i.e. regular being on a weekly or bi-weekly basis)
•Volunteering one-on-one with students within a school
•Volunteering in a group setting with students within a school
The following stipulates if you do not need a Background Check:
•You have completed and submitted a copy of your FBI Background Check within the past five years to MCSD Communications Office. (If your child has changed buildings and you would like to volunteer at their new location, please re-submit the Volunteer Application so that your name appears on that building's approved list.)
•A speaker in a classroom
•A volunteer for a special event in a classroom and/or school (i.e. party, COSI, dance)
You can get a Background Check at the Montville Township Police Department, 6665 Wadsworth Road. The hours in which you can have your Background Check are Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM-4:00 PM. The cost is $24 (cash or check only) for the FBI background check. You can choose to cover this cost or utilize the Background Check Certificate from the district stipulating that you are a Medina City Schools volunteer. You will receive this certificate via email (unless you stipulate otherwise) once you have completed your application and submit it to the Communications Office. Please expect an e-mailed response within 5-7 days of submission. Applications received over the summer will not be processed until the beginning of August.
In addition to the Background Check Certificate, Montville Township Police Department requires the completion of the following form prior to having your Background Check - Montville Police Department WebCheck Background Check Request. Where it states "Name of Organization Receiving the Results" - please indicate Medina City Schools, Communications Office, 739 Weymouth Rd, Medina, OH 44256.
Please note that the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, which runs the background checks, no longer guarantees results within 30 days of fingerprinting. Receipt of results can now take up to 45 days at certain times of the year. If you are considering volunteering, please keep this in mind and plan to have your fingerprinting done at least 45 days ahead of your planned school volunteer activity.
A school district representative will contact you once your application has been received and your Background Check is completed. Once you have established a volunteer assignment within the school district you will also receive an orientation to the building, your responsibilities, and volunteer guidelines.
